Assistant Vice Provost and Director of Academic Advisement

Education: University at Buffalo – BS Business Administration (HR concentration); Canisius – MS Education

Academic Path: I entered UB as an intended business (marketing) major with the desire to pursue a career as a buyer for a large retail organization (women’s fashions). However, after completing internships in the fields of business and education, I earned my degree with a focus in human resources. I then pursued graduate studies in education, and in 1998, began my career in higher education as an academic advisor for the University at Buffalo. I first served as an advisor for underrepresented (African American, Hispanic and Native American) student populations. In 2000, I moved into the position of pre-law advisor and developed the Pre-Law Student Services Center. In 2003, I was promoted to assistant director of Student Advising Services. In 2008, I was appointed as the Director of Academic Advisement and Student Advising Services. I tremendously enjoy working at the university and providing guidance to students as they pursue their academic and career goals.

Specialty Area: Academic Review, Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

Education: BA English, Canisius College; MS Rehabilitation Counseling; Certification: Certified Rehabilitation Counselor

Academic Path: I pursued an undergraduate degree in English because I greatly enjoy creative writing and reading about all kinds of people and their life stories. This avid interest in people’s memoirs and history led me to pursue a master’s degree in counseling, with a particular interest in wanting to work with people with disabilities. As an academic advisor, I greatly enjoy working with students and inspiring students to consider all of the possibilities that their lives can bring.

Specialty Area: Working with exploratory students & liaison to Office of Accessibility Resources

Hobbies and Interests: I enjoy spending time with my family and son. I like playing all sports, especially running and soccer. I love to watch movies, write, travel, and particularly read autobiographies.

Academic Path: I selected communication as my major and was intending to pursue a PhD in this area. I went so far as to apply and be accepted to graduate schools for communication, but found I liked the student support side of academic life and, therefore, changed my graduate focus.

Specialty Area: Overseeing prehealth (pre-med, pre-dentistry, pre-optometry, pre-chiropractic, pre-veterinary, pre-podiatry) and pre-law advising services. Advising predominantly prehealth juniors, seniors, international students, and returning students.

Academic Path: I began college not knowing what I wanted to major in. I chose broadcast journalism because I love public speaking. I thought if I had to choose something that would be a fine choice. However, in my senior year, by volunteering and by working with student government elections, I discovered I loved working with students. Therefore I applied and was accepted to the Graduate School of Education for Student Personnel Study.

Education: BA Social Sciences Interdisciplinary: Health & Human Services concentration. EdM School Counseling

Academic Path: I spent my freshman year at a small liberal arts college with plans to become a French teacher. I soon realized it wasn’t the best fit and transferred to UB. After my first semester exploring courses in psychology and sociology, I selected the Social Sciences Interdisciplinary major – a true combination of all of my interests. Knowing that I wanted to work in some type of helping profession, I spent the next few years further refining my career interests and ultimately decided that working with students in higher education was right for me.

Specialty Area: New student programs; transfer student services; academic orientation programs

Hobbies and Interests: Reading, music, crafts, spending time with friends and family, and keeping up with my two young children!

In the end though, I realized that my abilities and interests were stronger in the areas of political science and history.

Hobbies and Interests: On Wednesday evenings during the semester, you can find me at the Newman Center (UB’s Catholic Ministry) cooking dinner for over 200 students that come for a free, home cooked meal. The food is delicious! I currently have 4 parakeets that are super spoiled (they are rescues from their previous owners that didn’t want them), and they truly have a great life in my home. I also am growing a sewing business for which I make and create dog apparel (jackets, pajamas, bow ties, bandanas), as well as aprons and purses. I travel to Chicago quite frequently to visit my two artistic children who currently live there.

Education: University at Buffalo, 2008 – BA Psychology/Health & Human Services, Early Childhood Concentration, 2010 – EdM School Counseling

Academic Path: I came to UB intending to be a business major because I thought that was the route students took when undecided on a career path. However, I then received my first semester schedule and saw that I would be taking economics, so I immediately decided that I no longer wanted to pursue a business degree. I always had an interest in human behavior and why people do what they do, therefore I decided to pursue psychology as a major. I eventually supplemented the social sciences interdisciplinary major with the health & human services concentration, early childhood track and decided that I wanted to go to graduate school after completing my bachelor’s degree. I went to UB for school counseling with the intent to be a high school counselor. During graduate school, I worked as a graduate assistant academic advisor and discovered my true passion for helping students navigate their academic curriculum at UB.

    Specialty Area: Prehealth

Hobbies and Interests: I enjoy traveling, dining out, reading, and I am an avid Buffalo Bills fan!

Education: Geneseo, BA Math with Secondary Education Certification; University at Buffalo, Masters in Social Work; Buffalo State, MS Student Personnel Administration

Academic Path: Growing up, I was often encouraged to go into teaching and I frequently helped my friends with math, which is how I decided on math education without looking at any other options. However, within the first year of a full-time teaching job, I realized it wasn’t for me. I wanted to help students outside of the classroom so I went into social work. I worked with a variety of age groups before choosing to narrow my focus to college students. It took some trial and error for me to figure it out, as is common for many people, but I know I am now in the right place.

    Specialty Area: Prehealth

Hobbies and Interests: I love reading, music, movies, and most things that fall under the category of “geeky,” especially comic books and sci-fi.

Education: BA Applied Music & Journalism, BS Audio/Radio Production – SUNY Fredonia

Academic Path: When I began my academic career in 2010, I was a music education major hoping to secure a teaching job. I quickly realized that I had other passions different from music and decided to pursue those as well. It didn’t take long before I found myself working on three separate majors. Here at UB, I am finding myself working on three separate degrees in Higher Education Administration, Music Performance, and Communication Studies.

Specialty Area: Administrative support for the Prehealth Committee, Prehealth advising services, and new student registration.

Hobbies and Interests: Performing with local orchestras, traveling to areas outside of the US, rooting for the Buffalo Bills, and writing (when time allows)
