READY @ UB (PDF) is an in-person discussion group and an online Facebook community sponsored by Student Advising Services (SAS). READY @ UB provides a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to engage in conversations with other UB students who are undecided or confused about majors. The READY @ UB Discussion Series is facilitated by Jillian Reading and Caitlin Haskell, SAS Graduate Assistants.

READY @ UB is for undergraduates who are:

  • Undecided or confused about a major or minor
  • Thinking about changing their major
  • Seeking help with career exploration or navigation of UB resources

Transitions from High School to College
September 11, 2 - 3 p.m., 250 Student Union

The leap from high school to college is an important step in your life. Take a few moments to learn strategies to make this transition easier. We will discuss the similarities and differences between high school and college, as well as discuss any thoughts and feelings that members are experiencing.

Introduction to Majors
September 18, 2 – 3 p.m., 250 Student Union

Join us to explore the various majors, minors and certificate programs offered at UB. We will also discuss creating your own major with the Special Major program, and introduce participants to campus resources designed to help them develop an academic plan.

Myths & Realities
September 25, 2 – 3 p.m., 250 Student Union

Do you believe that most college students enter the university decided about a major or that it is better to declare a major than being undecided? Do you think that every career has a major associated with it or that every major must have a related career? Join us in a discussion and learn more about the realities of "choosing a major" at UB.

Tips for Registration
October 2, 2 - 3 p.m., 250 Student Union

This session will provide tips for maneuvering the registration process here at UB. Attend this discussion to learn how you can maximize your chances of getting the courses you want/need.

Changing Majors & Elective Courses
October 16, 2 - 3 p.m., 250 Student Union

Most students will change their major at least once during their undergraduate years. This session will explore the ways to go about making the changes as well as discuss how elective coursework can sometimes be essential to choosing a major that you love.

Professionalism & Networking
October 23, 2 - 3 p.m., 250 Student Union

Social networking provides many opportunities for college students to connect with future employers via the web. This session will explore how to maximize your online networking potential and how to present yourself in a professional manner.

Study Abroad & Learning Outside the Classroom
October 30, 2 - 3 p.m., 317 Student Union

UB offers students a multitude of resources to explore their interests. Attend this session to learn about opportunities such as studying abroad, securing internships and getting involved with undergraduate research.

Your GPA Does Matter
November 6, 2 - 3 p.m., 250 Student Union

Attend this session to learn how to calculate your GPA, how to improve your GPA and general information on how your overall academic performance will impact your ability to gain entrance into your undergraduate major (and graduate school).

How the Media Portrays Jobs
November 13, 2 - 3 p.m., 250 Student Union

Some students choose a career based upon characters in their favorite television shows. Attend this session to discuss how realistic the media’s portrayal is in regards to certain occupations.

Parental Pressures
November 20, 2 - 3 p.m., 250 Student Union

Most students will experience some degree of parental pressure related to choice of courses, majors, careers, etc This discussion will help students learn ways to deal with these pressures and communicate effectively with parents.

Reflection
December 4, 2 - 3 p.m., 250 Student Union

Discuss the semester; set goals for spring and RELAX! Enjoy food and drinks!
