The Peer Assistant Program in Student Advising Services (SAS) is aimed at connecting experienced upper-class students with fellow students by providing resources, assistance and support. Each year a select group of sophomore, junior or senior level students are chosen to become Peer Assistants. Becoming a Peer Assistant is an excellent opportunity for students who are interested in helping other students and who want to gain leadership and practical experience. If interested, junior or senior Peer Assistants can opt to complete this program as a three credit internship through the Public Service Internship Program (CPM 496).

Who is Eligible to Become a Peer Assistant?

UB students who:

  • Will be a sophomore, junior or senior at the time the position begins.
  • Have an overall UB GPA of at least a 2.75.
  • Are knowledgeable about UB's academic tools and resources.
  • Are available for the full academic year (fall-spring).
  • Complete a Peer Assistant Application.
  • Attend a mandatory training session.

What Does a Peer Assistant Do?

  • Commit to at least 4-5 hours a week for a minimum of 120 total hours per year.
  • As available in the summer, assist SAS advisors with orientation sessions.
  • Serve on the SAS Student Focus Group.
  • Submit student tips to the SAS Be Advised web log.
  • Assist with scheduled SAS events, workshops and other related programs.
  • Provide feedback and input on office publications (website, brochures, bulletin boards).

  • Gaining leadership and practical experience as a resume builder.
  • Develop transferable customer service and public speaking skills.
  • If interested, juniors and seniors can opt to take CPM 496 and receive three elective credits for their experience.
