Non-matriculated students enjoy the educational opportunities, resources, and personal experiences the University at Buffalo provides without committing to a four-year degree program. Non-matriculated study is ideal for individuals who seek to study particular subjects without taking all the courses required for an undergraduate degree.
NOTE: Prospective undergraduates who are qualified for admission to UB's undergraduate degree programs and intend to ultimately complete an undergraduate degree from UB are strongly urged to apply for admission as a matriculated student. Effective Fall 2009, non-degree students will be limited to a maximum of 9 credits per semester. In addition, non-degree students will be limited to a maximum of 30 credits total. You are encouraged to talk to an academic advisor for proper course selection. Please call Student Advising Services at 645-6013 to schedule an appointment.
Financial Aid
Financial Aid is not available to non-matriculated undergraduate students.
Registration
Refer to the non-matriculated registration page to see when you are able to register for classes. You must first complete the Undergraduate Non-Matric Student Data Form. A Non-Matriculation Processing Fee of $25 will be applied to the student's first bill of the semester upon registration. Each time the student registers as a non-matriculated student following a break in registration, a $25 fee will be applied. You may then register using the BIRD telephone system, 645-7800 or on-line using MyUB. Instructions for both ways to register, as well as the course offerings, can be found online at the Student Response Center.
Checklist of things to do:
- Get your UB identification card - go to the UB Card Office, Suite 211 The Commons (North Campus) or 101 Harriman Hall (South Campus).
- Get your UB Computer Account - go to the swipe station in the Lockwood Library (2nd floor Cybrary) to get your "UB IT Account" information. You will be asked to show your UB CARD.
- Log onto MyUB. From this site, your UB User Account will allow you to use e-mail, register for courses, check and print your schedule and access your grades via MyUB. In addition, many instructors use MyUB to relay important class information.
- Meet with an academic advisor in 109 Norton Hall, 645-6013 to ensure proper course selection.
- Get your Parking Hang Tag - go on-line to MyUB and link to "My Parking Permit" or go to Campus Parking and Transportation in 102 Spaulding (north campus) or 22 Diefendorf Annex (south campus).
Dropping or Resigning during the semester
When you register for a class(es), a seat will be reserved for you in that course. You will be expected to pay all tuition and fees for the course(s) in which you enroll, whether or not you attend any of the classes. Your bill is not cancelled if you fail to attend classes, unless you take action to formally drop the classes or resign.
Students who choose to withdraw from one or more courses without financial penalty must do so before the end of the first week of classes. You can drop your courses using the BIRD telephone system, 645-7800 or on-line at MyUB.
Students who choose to withdraw from the university by dropping all courses during the second week of classes will have a financial penalty, but no record of courses on your transcript. For more information, please consult the schedule of financial penalty. Students who choose to withdraw from the university or from all courses after the second week of classes will have a financial penalty and a grade of "R" for each course resigned. The last date on which students may resign is the end of the eleventh week of classes. You must resign from courses using BIRD or on-line. For specific information, consult the calendar of actual dates.
Students who must withdraw from the university after the end of the last date to resign courses should consult with an academic advisor in 109 Norton Hall, 645-6013. As per Faculty Senate-approved policy, administrative withdrawal at this point is based upon extraordinary circumstances and only considered for all courses in a semester.
Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory Grading Procedures for Undergraduate Courses
If you enroll in an undergraduate course, you may have the course graded normally with a letter grade or you may select to be graded "S" (Satisfactory) or "U" (Unsatisfactory). You must make your decision and file the forms at the Student Response Center before the end of the second week of classes in Spring or Fall, and by the last day to add a course in Summer Sessions. For more information, read the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory Grading Information on the "Explanation of Grades" page of the Undergraduate Catalog.
